Editing in Seattle
It is often a rare thing to love what you do. But I can say, without hesitation, that I love to edit. I love the process of helping works of fiction come to life in the real world. Every story deserves a chance to reach its full potential, and I love to help make that happen. Although I enjoy editing all kinds of fiction, I have a special fondness for science fiction and fantasy, as well as young adult and middle grade novels. I have immersed myself in these genres on a personal level, and so I find particular pleasure in watching these stories become books that people fall in love with.
I come from a writing background, with a degree in English Creative Writing from the University of Washington. But even then, it dawned on me that I was having as much fun editing the stories of my fellow students as I was writing my own. After a few years in the industry, I furthered my education by obtaining a Certificate in Editing through the University of Washington. Since then, I have been a freelance editor with the national Editorial Freelancers Association and the local Northwest Editors Guild. My clients include Orbit and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, imprints of Hachette Book Group, as well as Yen Press and Macmillan Children's. I also work with independent authors who are pursuing self-publishing.
In my spare time, I continue to write. I recently finished a lighthearted superhero novel set in Seattle, and I'm looking forward to participating in NaNoWriMo this year to brainstorm for my next project. I am also a coffee lover (though what Seattleite isn't?) and an incurable optimist. I love living in the Puget Sound—the pictures you see on my website are photographs that I took at Shi Shi Beach during a camping trip out on the coast (I would highly recommend it, if you're ever in the area). The most recent books I have fallen in love with are The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune, A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik, and The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart.
